What Is Paint Protection Film (PPF) and Is It Worth It?

If you've ever come back from a drive on I-84 or Highway 26 with a fresh rock chip in your hood, you've wondered about paint protection film. PPF — sometimes called clear bra — is the strongest physical protection you can put on your paint. Here's what it is and when it makes sense.

What PPF actually is

Paint protection film is a transparent, urethane-based film applied over your painted panels. Modern films are nearly invisible, resist yellowing, and many are self-healing — light swirl marks disappear with heat from the sun or warm water.

Unlike wax or ceramic coatings, which protect against chemicals and UV, PPF protects against physical impacts: rock chips, gravel, bug splatter, door dings and light scratches.

Where PPF matters most

The highest-impact zones are the front bumper, hood, fenders, side mirrors and rocker panels. Many owners do a 'full front' package, while others protect the entire vehicle. High-traffic areas like door edges and trunk ledges are popular add-ons too.

Is it worth the money?

PPF is one of the more expensive protection options, but consider the alternative: repainting a hood and bumper can easily run into the thousands, and repainted panels rarely match factory finish perfectly. For new vehicles, leased cars you want to return clean, or anything you plan to keep long-term, PPF often pays for itself in preserved resale value.

A common combo we recommend: PPF on the high-impact areas, with a ceramic coating over the whole car for easy washing and gloss.
