How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating So It Lasts
One of the biggest myths about ceramic coatings is that they're maintenance-free. They're not — they're low maintenance, which is different. Treat a coating right and it will protect and shine for years; neglect it and you'll wonder where the magic went.
Wash it the right way
Automatic brush washes are the enemy — they mar the coating and the paint beneath it. Stick to hand washing with a pH-neutral soap, the two-bucket method and a clean microfiber wash mitt. The good news: a coated car washes dramatically faster because dirt releases so easily.
Aim for a wash every two to four weeks. Letting road film and contaminants sit on the coating for months gradually clogs it and kills the beading.
Avoid the coating killers
Harsh degreasers, high-alkaline soaps and abrasive polishes all degrade coatings. Bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap should be removed promptly — a coating resists them, but doesn't make them harmless if they bake in the sun for weeks.
Boost it periodically
A ceramic spray topper every few months refreshes the slickness and hydrophobic behavior. Once a year, a professional decontamination wash removes bonded contaminants and restores performance. Do that, and a quality coating will comfortably outlive its warranty.
