Winter Car Care in Portland: Protecting Your Vehicle from Rain and Road Grime
Portland doesn't get much snow, but our winters are their own kind of hard on vehicles: months of constant rain, gritty road film, and damp interiors that never quite dry out. A little preparation in the fall pays off all winter.
Protect the paint before the rain sets in
Your paint's best defense against winter is a fresh layer of protection applied in the fall. A sealant or ceramic coating causes water to bead and sheet off, carrying dirt with it and making winter washes far more effective. Unprotected paint lets road film bond to the surface, where it slowly stains and etches.
Don't ignore the interior
Wet shoes track water and grit onto carpets every day from November through March. All-weather floor mats are worth every penny, and a fall interior detail with fabric protection helps carpets resist staining. If your car starts smelling musty, that's moisture sitting in the carpet padding — address it before mold sets in.
Wash more often than you think
It feels pointless to wash a car when it's raining, but winter road film is corrosive. A rinse every couple of weeks — including the undercarriage and wheel wells — prevents buildup. And when spring arrives, a full detail resets everything: decontaminate the paint, extract the carpets and start the dry season fresh.
